Hi everyone,
Newbie here who is currently taking his first leep into possibly owning a static...
Thinking about buying a used static caravan located on a park resorts site....then again having read this site and others i'm having serious second thoughts
Back OT, my uncle currenly owns the van we are considering buying....they are both getting on a bit and want out, mainly due ti ill health etc. Park resorts have basically offered 1k for the van (total rip off) as its worth much more.
Anyway we've been told that if we go into co-ownership i.e we give my uncle 3k for the van (unofficially) but keep them on as co-owners we get all their owners discount.....saving approx 700 a year in fees?
If we bought the van outright we'd loose their long term owners discount so to speak.
We then basically pick up the running costs going fowards until for example we can own the van in our own right.
Anyone had any experience of this as knowing Park Resorts i'm unsure if they will allow it?
Thanks,
John

I've no experience and am on a park resorts site. I see what you are saying about the loyalty discount off the fees. I'm unsure about the co-owner thing.
I just wanted to ask what if you fell out with your uncle? (these things do happen). How are you going to own the van in your own rights eventually?
Sorry not trying to be negative just trying to point out the pitfalls.
THanks
Jo

Hi Jo,
Well yes the plan is to own the van totally eventually. As this would be our first static i want to use it as an oppoutunity to see if its really for us prior to looking to upgrade in 2/3 years time. We should get at least 3 good seasons out of it prior to deciding whether or not to upgrade...
I do get your point about falling out with my uncle etc. He basically has no intention of using the van again and would obviously rather sell to us than Park for a grand...(no doubt they'll sell on at a huge profit)
The issue is of couse the discount in owners fees...700 a year is alot of money. I'd rather co-own for a period and make the saving as we all probably would.....

How can they offer £1000? Truly outrageous.
They must allow family to use the vans so why dont you just keep it in your uncles name and you pay the bills that way you will find out if you like owning a van after the novelty wears off and the reality of having to meet the costs kicks in this way you cant really lose. If you like it you can buy one yourself (though I would recommend looking at some independent parks rather than the ones that employ sales people) or you could walk away without taking the big
financial hit.

Hi funkyboy
Your suggestion isn't a bad one to be fair and has been discussed. The park have got the current owners by the short and curlies as the site fees are due month end.
I guess if we pay the fees plus other running costs and get full use of the van for the year it isnt a bad option.....then as you say decide after a while whether it is for us...

If the joint ownership bid falls through then yes, an application to co-own has been sent. We are just waiting on the outcome.

Sounds like a plan, hope you can pull it off. Interestingly, Park Resorts phoned be today regarding me moving to one of their sites...we said no, as we are happy with the site we are on.

Being offered £1000 is not uncommon. I know of a caravan on our park, complete with veranda (itself worth over £5000), site offered £7000 all in. It is now listed for sale at.........£32,995!!

I know I shouldn't say this but I'd leave Park Resorts out of it and just give my uncle the site fee's and running costs for the year plus a portion of the amount you decide on for the van. Is there a drawback in leaving everything in his name and you just using the van all time time - don't mean to be devious but £700 is a lot of money especially when the van is still in the same family.

I agree Arronbrook. I know other people that have done it.

Hi Quintastic, we have just added a family member as joint owner with no problems, so we now have three joint owners on both vans, you could always do the same but give your relative say £1.5K as a thank you. I dont think they will accept you paying bills without being a co owner, your uncle will have to pay and you pay him direct

Wednesday now moves on to Friday for a decision:rolleyes:
Why is it taking so long.....ahh but of course they arn't making any money out of it......
I wonder if i'd be treated any differently if i was buying a 15k van direct from them....;)

I am with you on this arronbrook - I wouldn't have involved PR at all. Will be interested to hear what they say, when they eventually reply ......

Friday moves on to sat. Despite numerous phonecalls they seem very reluctant to get back to us. Getting slightly miffed over it all.

Well you seem to have got your answer, they don't treat you as a customer, unless they can make a profit.Their business is Holiday Parks their focus as with all businesses is making a profit for the shareholders.

Finally sorted and without going into to much detail how it was done, we now fully own the van with reduced pitch fees....
Roll on March next year....:)

Thanks, the puchase went through just after the season ended.
Vans basically wintered down now, March can't come round soon enough.
Roll on next year, really looking forward to it:)
