Smile First time buyer needing advice

Hello,

me and my family are looking to buy a static caravan for the whole family so we can enjoy spontaneous family holidays away whenever we want.

I am very new and my knowledge about buying, fees, etc is very limited.

We are looking for probably a 6 berth caravan somewhere near the coast in scotland.

I would really appreciate it if someone experienced in this could explain to me the process of buying a caravan, explain fees and anything else you may think would be useful.

Many Thanks,

David.

David to the site and forum.

First points are:

BUDGET: The cost of the van, the cost of site fees, the cost of rates (if applicable), fuel costs-gas/electric, insurance, fuel costs regarding getting to the van.

SITE: Find a site that is not too far away from your home, I.E 2 hours max. No point in finding a cheap site if it will take you 3 hours to get there. Go and take a look at some sites that are within your distance. Walk around them, look to see what is happening on the site, loads of vans for sale, empty pitches may not be good. Talk to owners about the site. What facilities is there-the more there is the higher the site fees may be. What age limit is there on vans (if any), is letting allowed (do you want this?)

PITCH: Find a pitch that you like, maybe with a view, you don't want to be staring at a carpark or a brickwall.

VAN: Loads of styles of vans, try berfore you buy. Sit in it, lay on the beds, pretend to have a shower and make sure you can all move around and not get in each others way.

Do not be swayed by sales people. make your own mind up. A static is a way of life not an investment. You can never make money on your van. Whay might be good is for you to is to stay in a van on a site that you like to get a feel for it-if they do letting that is

to the forum David, what coast East or West. We are in Lochgoilhead not the coast precisely, although on a sea loch.

Remember you own the van but basically rent the pitch, it is not easy to move van so make sure you get the park and location sorted first as Eddiesolo has pointed out

Don't buy one with the intention of renting out to get some site fees back otherwise you won't be able to take spontaneous holidays.
