Smile Satellite Broadband??

Hi on this chilly day
Is anyone out there using satellite broadband? I've Googled providers extensively and it seems the set up is quite pricey, then packages vary.

Before I take the plunge I wondered if anyone can share their experiences with me? I work in my van a lot (writing) and really need decent internet. I used to tether my laptop but the signal is dire so now no good at all.

Do they work? I am not wanting to watch movies or download huge files - but decent, reliable browsing!

Thank you.
Penny

I use mobile broadband from 3 7.50 for a rolling month contract which I can cancel with a months notice. I get 1GB download which is more than adequate for me I don't download movies ect mainly I am on & off GS throughout day, I use email, check out websites ect and when I get home it switches automatically to wifi from our router so saving my data allowance with 3. They checked in the store that I would get a decent signal and have only had a couple of glitches in the months I've been using I think I lost signal for about an hour or so on 2 occassions.

I looked into it, but it tends to be 12 month contracts with not great upload/download limits unless you have deep pockets (you probably already know that). Haven't used it though so can't comment on quality, speed etc

Well sadly I am not an expert. A friend tried this on his park and it didn't work well. Performance suffered when it rained and the costs were high.

That said, I've stayed in a B&B in the Hebrides which used satellite and that was ok. Again the costs are high.

If you cant get anything else and you only want browsing then it might be worth a go..

I am not sure if this is satellite, but on our site we have free unlimited broadband access for all owners.

It is fantastic in all weathers...... never had a problem with it. I cant say i have seen a typical dish, but i have seen a white square type reciever on a high pole. Please excuse my ignorance, i am rubbish with IT.

I've just tweeted this for you, let's see what comes up

I think this could be popular, as many of us are finding variations in our mobile broadband signals - I know I certainly am

I have a MiFi dongle from Three, it on a PAYG deal which is good.

It allows me to connect up to 5 items i.e. laptops, mobiles etc, which is great having a wife & 2 kids that want to be online 24/7 (& me of course!).

The dongle cost me around 50 and you can top up any amount from 7.50

Have a look at the Three website.

I hope this helps.

Stuart

We have satellite broadband throughout our park. It is good for us as we can only get very slow speeds through regular broadband. There were a few problems with setup but since they were corrected it has been working ok. Not as reliable as regular broadband, and we are slightly dependent on the weather... in Italy!! As that is where the satellite company headquarters are.

Cant comment on how it would be for personal use, it is more expensive and setup costs are quite high.

For personal use i think you would be better with a dongle, or even use your phone as a hotspot if you have a good signal and the data in your phone package available.
